Oreo: Google announces release of the next version of Android 8

New software promises to extend battery life, improve notifications and speed up smartphones as Google pushes out updates to Pixel and Nexus devices

Google’s next version of Android is called Oreo and is being released today to hit smartphones and tablets in the near future.

Google announced that it has pushed the final version of Android 8 Oreo out to the Android Open Source Project, the underlying software on top of which the Android loaded on smartphones and other devices is built. Google’s Pixel and Nexus handsets will also soon see the update, with the beta programme participants receiving it first.
